As part of the nationwide efforts of the National Association of Letter Carriers, South Central Indiana Branch 828 has developed a strong commitment to community service that befits the role of letter carriers as public servants.
Branch 828 participates in the NALC Food Drive on the second Saturday in May each year. Branch 828 is responsible for organizing and coordinating food drive efforts in the communities which it serves. Branch 828 is assisted in these efforts by several groups and organizations including, but not limited to, the U.S. Postal Service, rural letter carriers, United Way of Monroe County, Hoosier Hills Food Bank, and numerous food pantries in the Branch 828 area. Kroger Grocery Stores has generously donated 67,000 plastic bags annually for the food drive. Bil Keane, creator of the Family Circus, graciously provides NALC with a new cartoon for the food drive each year. National sponsors include the AFL-CIO, Campbell's Soup, United Way of America and America's Second Harvest.
Also as part of a nationwide effort, Branch 828 sponsors various events to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
In purely local efforts, Branch 828 and The Herald-Times newspaper organize an annual coat drive in Monroe County for the less fortunate in our area. Again this is done with the assistance of the Postal Service and rural letter carriers.
Branch 828 participates annually in the Bowl for Kids' Sake (BFKS) to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Central Indiana. Branch 828 is annually one of the top fundraisers for the event. The Branch has won the Labor Strikes Back Trophy since its inception three years ago. The trophy is given to the top fundraising union for BFKS by the White River Central Labor Council.
